Frozen Mice Size Guide: Pinkies to XL
Choosing the right frozen mouse size is one of the simplest ways to keep your snake feeding well. Prey that is roughly as wide as the thickest part of your snake’s body is usually the sweet spot — too big and feeding gets stressful, too small and you end up offering more often than you need to.
This guide walks through The Feeder Co’s frozen mice sizes (pinkies through XL), with typical age and weight ranges, when to use each one, how packs of 10 work, and a few storage and thawing basics for South African keepers.
Frozen mice size chart
All our mice are sold as frozen whole prey in packs of 10. Use this table as a starting point, then match size to your animal’s body — not its age alone. Ages and weights are typical ranges.

Rule of thumb: if you are between sizes, size down and feed a little more often rather than forcing a meal that is too large.

Storage and thawing tips
- Store at −18°C and aim to use within about 6 months of purchase.
- Thaw fully in the fridge overnight, or in a sealed bag in cool water.
- Warm to room temperature before offering.
- Never microwave prey, and never refreeze thawed feeders.
Frozen-thawed prey is safer than live feeding for most captive reptiles — no bite or scratch risk from the feeder — and more humane than live feeding.
When to move up to rats
Mice are ideal for hatchlings through many adult colubrids. Once your snake’s girth outgrows even XL mice, or you keep larger pythons and boas, switch to frozen rats. A weaned rat is roughly in the same ballpark as an XL mouse; from there rats scale up through small, medium, large, XL, XXL and jumbo.
