Once your snake outgrows mice, frozen feeder rats are the next step. As with mice, match prey width to the thickest part of the body — and use age and weight ranges below as a guide, not a hard rule for every animal.
This guide covers The Feeder Co’s rat sizes from pinkies through jumbo, how they compare to mice, pack sizes, and the same storage basics we use for all frozen feeders.
Frozen rats size chart
Rats are available in packs of 5 or 10. Lengths below are approximate body length (excluding the tail). “Equivalent” shows a rough mice/rabbit comparison to help when you are stepping up from mice.
| Size | Age | Weight | Length* | Rough equivalent |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pinkies | 1–6 days | 3–8 g | 1–2″ | Mouse fuzzy |
| Fuzzies | 7–13 days | 9–20 g | 2–2.5″ | Hopper or weaned mouse |
| Pups | 2–3 weeks | 21–30 g | 2.5–3.5″ | Large / adult mouse |
| Weaners | 3–4 weeks | 31–45 g | 3.5–4.5″ | XL mouse |
| Small | 4–6 weeks | 46–79 g | 4.5–6″ | — |
| Medium | 6–8 weeks | 80–149 g | 6–8″ | — |
| Large | 8–10 weeks | 150–265 g | 8–9″ | ~½ lb rabbit |
| XL | Adult | 266–360 g | 9–11″ | ~1 lb rabbit |
| XXL | Adult | 361 g+ | 11″+ | ~1.5 lb rabbit |
| Jumbo | Large adult | Our largest | — | Biggest pythons & boas |
*Length is approximate body length, excluding the tail.
Rule of thumb: if you are between sizes, size down and feed a little more often.
When rats replace mice
Stay on frozen mice while XL mice still fit comfortably. A weaned rat sits roughly where an XL mouse leaves off — useful for growing corn snakes, house snakes, and young pythons. Larger pythons and boas usually move through small → medium → large and beyond.

Storage and thawing tips
- Store at −18°C and aim to use within about 6 months of purchase.
- Thaw fully in the fridge overnight, or in a sealed bag in cool water.
- Warm to room temperature before offering.
